Product details

Background & context

Ashigaru began as foot soldiers whom the clans fetched from the fields for a single campaign, and over the course of the Sengoku period they turned into drilled professional soldiers. When the first matchlock firearms reached the country by way of Tanegashima in 1543, the Daimyō equipped whole blocks with them. At Nagashino in 1575 it became clear what massed teppo volleys do to charging cavalry. The bow never disappeared for all that; both weapons stood side by side in the line.

On the tabletop

With these 24 ashigaru you field the missile troops of your Sengoku army, in 28 mm scale. During assembly you decide for each figure whether it carries the yumi bow or the teppo matchlock. Musketeers in close ranks fire volleys at charging samurai before they reach your line. Archers stand alongside them, since both weapons were used together in battle. Spearmen with yari protect the shooters from close combat.
