Background & context

The ancient Iberians were one of the most impressive peoples of the Iberian Peninsula and among Rome's most persistent adversaries during its republican expansion. Their armored warriors - the so-called Scutarii - wore chainmail or breastplates and were considered particularly dangerous close-quarters fighters. As valuable mercenaries, they also fought in the service of Carthage, for example, in the Punic Wars under Hannibal. Their characteristic weaponry, including the Falcata sword and the pilum, made them a versatile and formidable fighting force. The ornate equipment with decorated belts, helmets, and shields reflects the great pride and martial culture of the Iberian nobility.

On the tabletop

With 36 armoured warriors and four leaders you field the heavy core of an Iberian army fighting Rome or serving in Carthaginian pay. Sword and dagger are for close combat, javelin and pilum for the volley just before the clash, so the unit takes its place in the centre of the battle line. Oval, scutum and round shields can be mixed, and chiefs and standard bearers lead the band. Light Iberians and slingers support it on the flanks.
