Hintergrund & Einordnung

The Scythians, Parthians, and Sarmatians were among the most feared equestrian nomads of antiquity. As masters of mounted archery, they shaped battlefields from the Eurasian steppe to the Near East. The so-called "Parthian shot" - shooting backward while galloping - became a symbol of their superior combat tactics. These peoples operated as independent powers but also fought as allies of Persians, Greeks, and Macedonians. Historical sources and archaeological finds also indicate that Scythian women actively participated in battles as warriors.

Einsatz im Spiel

Ancient Horse Archers are used in Hail Caesar as mobile horse archers for Scythian, Sarmatian, or Parthian cavalry armies. In the game, the unit generates ranged pressure, bypasses cumbersome enemies, and can employ tactics such as feigned retreats, flanking fire, and Parthian Shot-like maneuvers. They should exploit distance, mobility, and open spaces rather than getting bogged down in prolonged close combat.
