Background & context

The Scythians, Parthians, and Sarmatians were among the most feared equestrian nomads of antiquity. As masters of mounted archery, they shaped battlefields from the Eurasian steppe to the Near East. The so-called "Parthian shot" - shooting backward while galloping - became a symbol of their superior combat tactics. These peoples operated as independent powers but also fought as allies of Persians, Greeks, and Macedonians. Historical sources and archaeological finds also indicate that Scythian women actively participated in battles as warriors.

On the tabletop

Twelve horse archers from the steppe fight at a distance: they shoot, evade and come back, and while withdrawing they loose the Parthian shot to the rear. Keep them out of melee. Separate upper and lower bodies allow shots in every direction, and heads and quivers make them Scythians, Saka, Dahae or Parthians, while they also serve as Sarmatians. As allies they ride for Persians, Greeks or Macedonians, and a female torso is included as an option.
