Background & context

Der große keltische Jagdhund, aus dem später der Irish Wolfhound wurde, galt in Gallien als Besitz von Rang: Er lief bei der Hirschjagd mit, lag im Haus des Fürsten und wanderte als Geschenk zwischen den Stämmen. Römische Autoren notierten die Rasse mit Respekt, weil sie ihr auf Feldzügen begegneten. Im Kampf ließ man solche Hunde in Rudeln vor die Linie, wo sie Pferde nervös machten und Formationen aufbrachen. Für eine Kelten-Armee ist der Rudelführer eine Randerscheinung mit großer Wirkung.

On the tabletop

The Celtic packmaster with three wolfhounds is a small, mobile element beside the big warrior blocks of your Celtic army in Hail Caesar. Historically the hounds were let loose to unsettle the enemy and drag riders from the saddle so the warriors could finish them off, and on the table you use them against enemy cavalry accordingly. In Gaul the great hunting hound was a prized possession. The hounds are supplied in a random selection.
