    Product details

    Background & context

Chariots were a central element of Celtic warfare - particularly among the British Celts, they were considered a decisive weapon on the battlefield. The chieftain used his chariot not only for rapid movement but also as a status symbol and to intimidate the enemy. Roman authors reported on the speed and maneuverability of these vehicles with a mixture of admiration and dread. The driver, daringly balancing on the pole and yoke while the chieftain threw and fought, demonstrated a precision that amazed even experienced soldiers.

    On the tabletop

A chieftain in his chariot leads your Celtic force in Hail Caesar and Clash of Spears. The metal model is based on an illustration by Angus McBride for Osprey: the leader in the back of the chariot, his driver out on the pole. The Celts of Britain in particular went to battle like this, as Caesar found when he landed in 55 BC. Place the chariot as your commander close to your warrior blocks, where it leads the line and can quickly change position when needed.
