Background & context

Among the tribes north of the Alps, the wild charge decided matters, not the exchange of missiles - archers remained a sideline. On the Continent the bow was nonetheless part of warfare: Caesar noted Celtic archers at the siege of Gergovia in 52 BC. In Britain, by contrast, it remained a hunting weapon, and the sling was preferred there. On the gaming table, such archers are either experienced hunters or warriors for whom the shield wall has become too cramped.

On the tabletop

These eight archers in four poses suit Celtic tribes just as well as Dacians and Germans. In Hail Caesar they stand in front of or beside your warrior blocks and shoot at the enemy while the main force is not yet in close combat. They can represent skilled hunters or men too young or too old for the melee. On the continent the bow was used in war, and Caesar mentions archers at Gergovia in 52 BC.
