Product details

Background & context

The slingers of the Balearic Islands were considered the most masterful sling fighters in antiquity. Trained in the use of the sling since childhood, they served as sought-after mercenaries in the armies of Carthage and Rome during the Punic Wars. A skilled slinger could hurl his projectile up to 400 meters - further than an archer. In addition to stones, many slingers used lead projectiles, which were barely visible to the enemy and had a devastating effect. Hannibal valued these troops extraordinarily and specifically deployed them at the beginning of battles to disrupt enemy formations.

On the tabletop

The twelve Balearic slingers open the fight for a Carthaginian or Roman army of the Punic Wars. Their slings reach up to 400 metres, further than a bow, and the small shot is hard to see in flight. Deploy them as a loose screen ahead of your heavy infantry, shoot at the enemy as it approaches and pull them back before the lines meet in close combat. Hills and scrub give them extra protection.
