    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The Samnites were a tribal confederation of Oscan peoples who inhabited Central and Southern Italy. In the three Samnite Wars (343-290 BC), they fought tenaciously against the expanding Roman Republic and gained a considerable military reputation. Their warriors preferred to fight in loose formation with javelins and swords, especially in hilly or wooded terrain, where they could fully exploit their mobility. As feared mercenaries and allies, they also served in Carthaginian armies. Their armored warriors represented the elite of the Samnite forces and were closely related to neighboring Italic peoples such as the Lucani, Bruttii, and Campani.

    Einsatz im Spiel

    Ancient Armoured Samnites in Hail Caesar and Clash of Spears can be used as mobile close-combat or supporting infantry for Samnite and Italic armies in the wars against Rome. In the game, the unit occupies terrain, supports the main line, and attacks vulnerable targets, without taking on the role of a rigid spear or hoplite formation. They work best in conjunction with ranged fighters, chariots, or heavier troops, so that their mobility and close-combat pressure do not dissipate in isolation.
