Background & context

The Amorites were nomadic tribal warriors of the Near East who were integrated into the city-state armies of Mesopotamia as mercenaries and levy troops in the 3rd and 2nd millennia BCE. Known by various names-Martu, Amurru, or Aamu-they formed the light infantry of numerous armies, including early Babylonian armies, where they were referred to as Sabum Qallatum. Armed with spears, javelins, and axes, as well as the typical Amorite shield made of animal hide on a wooden frame, they were versatile warriors on the battlefields of early antiquity.

On the tabletop

The shield sets these eight Amorite levy warriors apart: animal hide stretched over a cross of wooden rods. It was light and quickly replaced, and it stopped javelins and arrows, but it was no match for a closed line of spears. That is why in Hail Caesar they fight not in the centre but at the front and on the flanks of your Amorite army. Paint the shields in a consistent pattern and your army is recognisable at a glance.
