Product details

Background & context

The American Civil War was the first conflict in which railways, the telegraph and mass production set the pace. Between 1861 and 1865 more than three million men were under arms, organised in regiments that carried their state in their name and whose flags stood for entire regions. Fighting was still done in line and column, but the rifled musket already made the frontal assault murderous. The subject still draws its appeal today from this tension between the old order and the new effect of weapons.

On the tabletop

Six infantry regiments, one regiment each of Zouaves, skirmishers, mounted and dismounted cavalry, six guns and six mounted commanders go from the sprues onto their bases in this box. With the flag sheets for the Union and the Confederacy you decide who fights for which side, and under the commanders the regiments become brigades. You set up the MDF barn and snake-rail fences as a small farm on the table. Play follows the A5 Black Powder rulebook, plus the 36-page Civil War companion booklet and six dice. More regiments are available later as individual Epic sprues.
