Background & context

Carthage relied on the North African forest elephant, a markedly smaller animal than the Indian elephants of the Successors. At Raphia in 217 BC the two kinds met, and the smaller ones gave way. In any case the effect lay less in the animal than in the terror: horses shied, formations opened up, lines fell into disorder. The giants could only be steered up to a point, however, and at Zama in 202 BC Scipio simply opened lanes in his deployment, let Hannibal's animals run through and won against them.

On the tabletop

You use the two war elephants against dense formations and enemy cavalry, because horses shied away from the animals and ranks fell into disorder. They could only be steered to a limited extent, as Scipio showed at Zama when he opened lanes in his line and let the elephants run through. You build the crew as Carthaginian, Roman, Ptolemaic or Numidian. Trunk, leg position, ribbons and neck bells are chosen for each animal separately.
