Background & context

In der ägäischen Bronzezeit war der Streitwagen das teuerste Stück Kriegsgerät, das ein Fürst besitzen konnte. Die Linear-B-Tafeln aus Knossos und Pylos führen ganze Wagenparks samt Rädern und Geschirr einzeln auf, Stück für Stück inventarisiert. Gefahren wurde leicht, ohne Panzerung der Pferde. Ob die Achäer damit anritten und zum Kampf abstiegen, wie es die Ilias schildert, oder wie im Vorderen Orient von der Plattform aus schossen, ist bis heute offen.

On the tabletop

The Achaean chariot brings a hero of the Aegean Bronze Age into your Hail Caesar army. The kit contains the chariot, two unarmoured horses, the driver and a choice of two warriors, so you decide who stands beside the charioteer. Whether the Achaeans fought from the car or, as in the Iliad, drove up and dismounted is still debated, and the model suits either reading. Several chariots together form a chariot contingent for armies from Homer's world.
