    Background & context

    The T-55 was developed from the T-54 in response to nuclear, biological, and chemical threats. Its design was completed in 1956; series production began on January 1, 1958, and the Red Army commissioned the T-55 on May 8. From 1961, the protection system was further developed, resulting in the T-55A, which featured radiation-proof lining and other equipment modifications. The T-54/55 family was produced in very large numbers and exported worldwide.

    On the tabletop

    The T-55 and the early T-55A are main battle tanks of the Soviet Army and its allies, built from 1958 with protection for the crew in case of a nuclear strike. In Cold War scenarios you field them by the platoon, for Soviet units as well as for the East German NVA. You recognise the T-55 by the missing anti-aircraft machine gun on the turret, while the T-55A had an enlarged driver hatch and hatch rims to make room for the anti-radiation lining. Detailed tracks, open hatches and crew are included.
