    Product details

    Background & context

Proto-chariots date from the first half of the Middle Bronze Age and represent a transitional form between the older platform wagon and the later battle chariot. They are characterized by a centrally placed axle - in contrast to the rear axle of later chariots - which limited maneuverability. The vehicle was occupied by only one man and served primarily as a command or reconnaissance vehicle. It is attested for Neo-Sumerian successor states, early Amorite kingdoms, Zagros highlanders, and early Elamite armies of the Middle Bronze Age.

    On the tabletop

The proto-chariot sits between the platform cart and the chariot proper: its axle is in the centre, which makes it less manoeuvrable, and it carries only one man. In Hail Caesar you use it as a vehicle for a commander or as a scout, depending on whether the commander or the javelinman rides. It suits Neo-Sumerian successor states, early Amorite kingdoms, Zagros highlanders and early Elamites. Cut down the included four-animal yoke pole for the pair of horses.
