Product details

Background & context

In the heavy weapons companies of an American infantry battalion the jeep did not carry officers, it carried ammunition. Mortar and machine gun platoons piled their crates on the bonnet and back seat, the trailer took the rest, and the crew's kit went on top. Loads were lashed down with whatever was to hand, mostly rope and webbing. Anyone driving farm tracks loaded like that fitted chains in rain and snow, or the lot got stuck in the first sunken lane.

On the tabletop

In the second accessory set the load is out in the open: crates, packs and helmets are roped to bonnet and rear, with a further load filling the trailer. Here too, four wheels with snow chains replace the kit wheels. That gives a second jeep in your column a different load from the first. In weapons companies, jeeps mainly carried ammunition for mortar and machine gun platoons.
