    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the heaviest fighter aircraft of World War II and was deployed by the US Air Force in almost all theaters of war. Its strength lay in the combination of massive armament, robust construction, and considerable payload capacity, which qualified it equally as an escort fighter and a fighter-bomber. It could fully exploit its performance advantages particularly at medium and high altitudes, while at lower altitudes it reached its limits against agile enemy types. Over the course of the war, it developed into the most important fighter-bomber platform for the US Air Force and inflicted significant damage on enemy infrastructure and supply routes.
