Background & context

At the beginning of June 1942 the Japanese fleet intended to take Midway and bring the remaining US carriers to battle. It ran into an ambush: four Japanese aircraft carriers were lost within a day, and the initiative in the Pacific changed sides for good. In the air two opposites met: the A6M2 Zero turned tighter and climbed better, the F4F Wildcat could take considerably more punishment. American pilots learned from this to avoid the turning fight and to attack in pairs.

On the tabletop

Each side gets a squadron of six aircraft: the A6M2 Zero for the Japanese navy, the F4F Wildcat for the US Navy. All twelve sit on Advantage Flying Bases, whose position shows which aircraft currently has the advantage. Aircraft Cards and Trait Cards record the stats and quirks of the two types, while the 17 Doctrine Cards and 18 Theatre Cards bring tactics and the situation over Midway into the game. Shooting is done with the 12 Combat Dice, and markers come from the two punchboards and the token sprue. You apply the national insignia either as stickers or as waterslide transfers.
