    Background & context

    Francis Gabreski, Sohn polnischer Einwanderer aus Pennsylvania, war als Flugschüler alles andere als auffällig. Erst bei den polnischen Piloten der 315. Squadron der RAF lernte er, im Luftkampf ruhig zu bleiben. Ab Februar 1943 flog er die P-47 in der 56th Fighter Group und übernahm im Juni die 61st Fighter Squadron. Am 20. Juni 1944 hatte er seine Pflichtstunden voll, hängte aber noch einen Einsatz dran, beschädigte beim Tiefangriff den Propeller und ging hinter der Front auf den Bauch; fünf Tage später endete die Flucht in der Gefangenschaft.

    With 28 victories, Francis 'Gabby' Gabreski was the most successful American fighter pilot against the Luftwaffe over Europe, and he later became an ace in Korea as well. With the Polish No. 315 Squadron of the RAF he learned to stay calm in combat, and then he led the 61st Fighter Squadron of the 56th Fighter Group. In Blood Red Skies you put his P-47, with its own advantage base and cards, at the head of your Thunderbolt squadron. In June 1944 his war ended with a crash landing and captivity.
