Background & context

Lockheed entwarf die Maschine in weniger als sechs Monaten rund um das britische Halford-H.1-Triebwerk, 1944 flog der Prototyp, ein Jahr später standen erste P-80 unter Gefechtsbedingungen in Italien. 1947 stellten die Amerikaner ihr Bezeichnungssystem um: Aus dem P für Pursuit wurde das F für Fighter, dieselbe Maschine hieß fortan F-80. In Korea galt sie bereits als überholt, flog aber allein in den ersten vier Monaten rund 1.500 Einsätze über der MiG Alley. Am 8. November 1950 holte eine Shooting Star die erste MiG-15 herunter.

On the tabletop

The F-80C Shooting Star was one of the first American jet fighters and flew the first missions into MiG Alley in the Korean War, even though it was already somewhat outdated. On 8 November 1950 a Shooting Star shot down the first MiG-15, in one of the first ever jet-versus-jet engagements. In Blood Red Skies you send the four fighter-bombers, with six heavy machine guns, bombs and rockets, against ground targets and MiGs alike. It goes well with MiG Alley.
