    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The American War of Independence arose from a conflict between the British colonies in North America and the central government in London, which ignited over tax disputes and the question of political self-determination. What began as civil resistance developed into an armed uprising, in which newly formed Continental forces confronted well-trained British regiments. Hessian mercenary troops also fought on the side of the Crown, while colonial militias and allied indigenous warriors played an important role on the side of the Patriots. The war lasted about eight years and ended with the independence of the United States.
