Background & context

The Continental Army was a stopgap that became an army. Raised in 1775, it consisted at first of men on short enlistments, with mixed clothing and little training; hunting shirts were more common than uniform coats. The winter of 1777/78 at Valley Forge changed that: Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben drilled the regiments to a simplified Prussian drill manual and, for the first time, took the bayonet seriously. From Monmouth in 1778 the Continentals stood in close-order line against British regulars, and held.

On the tabletop

Washington raised the Continental Army because militia alone could not stand against British regulars. Once drilled, these regiments fought in close ranks in the European manner, and from Monmouth in 1778 they did so successfully. With 24 musketeers including command and six light infantrymen you build the regular core of your American army in Black Powder and add militia units to it. Eight full-colour flags come with the guide.
