Background & context

Gustav Horn (1592-1657) stammte aus dem finnischen Adel und lernte das Kriegshandwerk bei Moritz von Nassau, dem großen Reformer der niederländischen Armee. Nach der Belagerung von Riga 1621 und Feldzügen in Estland und Polen machte ihn Gustav II. Adolf 1630 zum Feldmarschall und Stellvertreter für den Einmarsch in Norddeutschland. Bei Breitenfeld schlug er Tilly, danach stieß er bis tief nach Bayern vor. 1634 geriet er bei Nördlingen in Gefangenschaft und kam erst nach acht Jahren frei.

On the tabletop

Gustav Horn leads your Swedish army or one of its wings in Pike & Shotte as a field marshal. He was regarded as one of Gustavus Adolphus's most gifted lieutenants and holds your line together on the table. He learned his trade under Maurice of Nassau, beat Tilly at Breitenfeld and was captured at Nördlingen in 1634, spending eight years in captivity, both of which make fitting scenarios. The mounted figure is metal.
