Background & context

In the 18th century, many North American settlements had to organize their own defense. The British army had a limited presence in America, which meant local militias played an important role. Such units consisted of civilian inhabitants and, depending on their political allegiance, could fight on either the patriotic or loyalist side. Their attire, consisting of everyday clothes, hunting shirts, and various headwear, is consistent with the irregular troops of the American Revolution and the French and Indian War.

On the tabletop

Militia reinforced both sides in 18th century North America, and in the War of Independence militiamen marched for the Americans as well as for the Crown as Loyalists. In Black Powder you field the 30 plastic figures in civilian clothes or hunting shirts as a numerous force that fires from cover. Since hardly anyone carried a bayonet, it avoids close combat with regular troops. With the headgear included you can also build French troops for the French and Indian War.
