Background & context

Churchill called Italy the soft underbelly of Europe, and the book's title turns that image around. After the 1943 landings the German defenders built a chain of fortified lines across the peninsula, using mountains and rivers. Monte Cassino held the Allies up until May 1944, and the Anzio beachhead stayed contained for months. The Gothic Line in the north only gave way in spring 1945, shortly before the German forces in Italy surrendered.

On the tabletop

This book lets you refight the battles between the Gustav Line and the Gothic Line in Bolt Action, with a focus on the Anzio breakout and the fighting around Monte Cassino. The scenarios set historical starting situations, and the Theatre Selectors control which units your army may field in Italy. Additional units and special rules extend the lists on both sides. You will also need the core rulebook.
