Background & context

In the spring of 1945, the Pacific War experienced one of its most intense phases with mass kamikaze attacks on the US fleet. American fighter pilots from naval and carrier air wings faced the challenge of intercepting enemy suicide machines before they could reach their targets. Philip Kirkwood was among those pilots who qualified as an ace in a single day of combat-an achievement that was extraordinary even by the standards of experienced Pacific veterans. The deployment of the F4U Corsair as a carrier and land-based fighter shaped the aerial landscape over the Western Pacific in the late stages of the war.

On the tabletop

Philip Kirkwood became an ace in a single day off Okinawa in April 1945, shooting down six kamikaze aircraft and even diving into the flak of his own ships to do it. In Blood Red Skies his F4U Corsair is a named ace for interception scenarios in which your squadron has to keep large attack waves away from the fleet. He ended the war with twelve victories. Cards and game aids are included.
