Background & context

The P-38 Lightning was one of the most distinctive American fighter aircraft of World War II - recognizable by its unusual twin-boom, twin-engine design. Its relatively long range made it particularly valuable for escort duties on long-range missions and for low-level attacks on ground targets. In the Pacific, the type was deployed in large numbers and became the mainstay of the American fighter arm in this theater of war. Although agile Japanese fighters could outperform it at low speeds, American pilots used the aircraft's strengths - rate of climb and top speed - to maintain the initiative in high-speed combat.

On the tabletop

The P-38 Lightning was valued for its range: as an escort fighter deep over occupied Europe and above all in the Pacific. At low speed it loses any turning fight with the Zero, so in Blood Red Skies you use its speed and climb for several fast passes. The Sustained Dive doctrine and the Heavy Hitter, Great Dive and Agile traits come with the squadron. You can also recreate the 1943 intercept of Admiral Yamamoto's aircraft with it.
