    Product details

    Background & context

The Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu was one of the most significant heavy fighter aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force in World War II. As a twin-engine type, it was conceptually influenced by European destroyer aircraft and was originally intended to intercept Allied bombers en route to their targets. However, the Toryu quickly reached its limits in the escort role, as agile single-seat adversaries were tactically superior. Instead, it proved effective as a bomber interceptor, where its heavy armament was particularly effective. It was present in numerous theaters of the Pacific War and was considered a serious threat by Allied crews.

    On the tabletop

The Ki-45 Toryu was meant as an escort fighter, but it lost one-on-one fights with single-engined Allied fighters and found its role as a bomber hunter. That is exactly how you use the six aircraft in Blood Red Skies: against bomber formations, not against nimble fighters. The Big Game Hunters doctrine, six Heavy Hitter traits and one Agile trait reflect its heavy cannon armament. From 1944, Nick crews flew night interceptions against B-29s over the home islands.
