Background & context

Yozo Tsuboi completed his flight training in early 1943 and gained his first combat experience in the Pacific, including with liquid-cooled floatplanes in the area of present-day Indonesia. Later in the war, he transferred to the defense of the Japanese homeland and flew the powerful Mitsubishi J2M Raiden, a fighter specifically designed for high-speed intercept missions. Within a few months, he achieved five confirmed aerial victories against heavily armed US bombers and carrier-based aircraft, making him the only ace to fly this type of aircraft. In the spring of 1945, he fell victim to the defensive fire of an American bomber.

On the tabletop

Yozo Tsuboi was the only ace on the J2M Raiden, with five and a half victories between December 1944 and February 1945, including two B-29s and several Hellcats. In Blood Red Skies his Raiden leads an interceptor squadron against bomber formations: gain height, hit the formation and avoid turning fights with the escorts, since the Raiden is built for climbing. Before that he flew floatplane fighters in the Dutch East Indies. The resin model comes with game aids and cards.
