    Background & context

    The Grumman F6F Hellcat was one of the defining carrier-based aircraft of the US Navy in World War II and was deployed in large numbers starting in mid-1943. Its combination of robustness, armament, and solid flight performance made it the preferred fighter aircraft for American carrier pilots in the Pacific. Measured by the documented aerial victories of the US Navy, the vast majority of all kills were attributed to this type. Some of the manufactured aircraft were also supplied to the British Fleet Air Arm, where the Hellcat served under its own name.

    On the tabletop

    From August 1943 the F6F Hellcat is the US Navy's carrier fighter, rugged, fast and well armed. It accounted for 75 per cent of the US Navy's aerial victories in the Pacific, 5156 Japanese aircraft for 270 of its own lost in air combat. In Blood Red Skies the Top Cover doctrine and the Rapid Roll and Robust trait cards give the six aircraft their characteristics. Opponents are Japanese fighters, and the British Fleet Air Arm flew the Hellcat as well.
