Background & context

The Vought F4U Corsair was one of the most powerful carrier-based fighter aircraft of World War II and also proved effective on improvised airfields in the Pacific. Originally designed for aircraft carrier operations, it truly came into its own over the tropical islands of the Pacific theater, where it significantly outclassed its Japanese adversaries. The aircraft was characterized by an exceptional combination of air combat capability and bomb-carrying capacity, making it a versatile tool for the American air forces.

On the tabletop

Designed as a carrier fighter, the F4U Corsair first fought from rough island airfields, for example over Guadalcanal. For Blood Red Skies the squadron brings the Sustained Dive doctrine and the Great Dive and Robust traits, so you attack from a dive and soak up hits. By the end it had scored 2140 air victories against 189 losses. Because the Corsair dropped over 70 per cent of all bombs delivered by American fighters, it also suits scenarios against ground targets.
