Background & context

The US Navy relied on two completely different carrier-borne aircraft during the Pacific War: the SBD Dauntless as a dive bomber and the older TBD Devastator as a torpedo bomber. While the Dauntless had only entered service in 1940 and proved to be decisive for the war, the Devastator was already an outdated model at the time of America's entry into the war. Its brief chapter ended with heavy losses and almost no impact before it was replaced by more modern aircraft. The Dauntless, however, shaped US Navy air warfare into the middle phase of the war and is considered one of the most significant carrier aircraft of World War II.

On the tabletop

With three SBD Dauntlesses and three TBD Devastators you recreate the American carrier strike at Midway in June 1942 in Blood Red Skies. The Devastators came in low and pulled the Japanese Zeros down, while the Dauntlesses dived on the carriers from above and crippled all four. The Sluggish and Laden traits and the Interlocking Fire doctrine show how vulnerable the bombers are, so they need an escort. Shortly afterwards the Devastator was withdrawn from service.
