    Product details

    Background & context

During World War II, the Japanese carrier-based air force developed a close tactical cooperation between dive bombers and torpedo bombers, fundamentally changing naval warfare in the Pacific. While dive bombers were intended to neutralize enemy anti-aircraft defenses and provide cover, the slower torpedo bombers approached the target at water-surface level. This coordinated attack scheme impressively demonstrated the superiority of airborne naval warfare over heavily armed surface ships. Despite its increasingly outdated design, the B5N remained in service throughout the Pacific War because its successor only became operational late in the war.

    On the tabletop

With three Aichi D3A Vals and three Nakajima B5N Kates you fly the Japanese carrier strike against ships in Blood Red Skies: the dive bombers first knock out the target's anti-aircraft defences, then the slower torpedo bombers move in. Scenarios such as Pearl Harbor or the raids in the Indian Ocean suit them. The Vulnerable and Laden traits show how exposed the loaded aircraft are. The Seasoned Pilots doctrine, tokens and decals are included.
