Background & context

John Brunt was 22 when he died near Faenza in December 1944, hit by a mortar fragment a few days after the action for which he received the Victoria Cross. His platoon was holding a position against German tanks and infantry at the time, and Brunt moved from weapon to weapon until the attack petered out. Many regard the Italian campaign as a sideshow. For the men in the villages along the Apennines it was a grinding fight for houses and heights over two winters.
