    Product details

    Background & context

Between 1770 and 1830 the third rate was the measure of all things in naval warfare. It carried enough guns for the line of battle, yet still sailed fast enough to operate on its own, and cost a fraction of a three-decker. The Royal Navy at times kept more than a hundred of them in service, and France and Spain built to the same principle. Whoever raised a fleet in this era raised third rates above all.

    On the tabletop

Third rates with 64 to 80 guns on two decks formed the core of every line of battle; at Trafalgar they made up most of Nelson's line and two thirds of the Franco-Spanish fleet. You can build the three plastic models in this box for any nation, and three figureheads and stern plates make each ship distinct. In Black Seas they fight in the line, go cruising or protect convoys. Sails, rigging thread, ratlines, flags, ship cards and wake markers are included.
