Product details

Background & context

Between 1770 and 1830 the ships of the line decided the great battles, but everyday life at sea belonged to the smaller vessels. Frigates cruised alone for months, guarded trade routes, hunted privateers and told the fleet where the enemy was. Two-masted brigs were cheap, quick to build and in service everywhere: as couriers, guard ships and privateers. An officer who wanted a career wanted exactly that, a small command far away from the flagship.

On the tabletop

In Black Seas, frigates and brigs handle the work away from the line of battle. The two frigates scout for the fleet, hunt privateers and merchantmen and keep clear of ships of the line. In large battles the four brigs relay orders, and they suit commerce raiding and small scenarios. Flags and pennants for every nation let you add them to a British, French, Spanish or American fleet, and ship cards and wake markers are included.
