Background & context

Between 1770 and 1830 wars were by no means decided on land alone: trade routes, colonies and supplies depended on frigates that lay on station alone and on brigs that got dispatches through. The great ships of the line made the headlines, the small square-riggers did the daily work. Because in Black Seas the wind determines the order of the turns, it is exactly this everyday business that gets played out: anyone who positions himself badly to the wind loses the initiative before the first shot is fired.

On the tabletop

Three frigates and six brigs in 1:700 scale make two small squadrons, one under the British flag and one under the French. Before the first game the hulls get sails, printed ratlines and rigging thread, and you tease smoke and fire out of the wool. On the A0 mat you lay out islands, sandbanks and the Martello tower from the punchboard sheets, and measuring is done with the card rulers. The ship cards record the stats of each ship, you roll D10, D6 and D3, and because the wind determines the turn order, every change of course counts. Larger ships of the line can be added later from the fleet boxes.
