Background & context

The Yorktown class comprised three US aircraft carriers, of which only USS Enterprise survived the war. USS Yorktown was transferred to the Pacific after Pearl Harbor and participated in early American counteroffensives. She was damaged in the Battle of the Coral Sea, but returned after quick repairs in time for Midway. There, she played an important role but was abandoned after further hits and torpedo damage.

On the tabletop

The USS Yorktown carries the air strikes of your early American Pacific fleet in Victory at Sea. Her aircraft fought in the Coral Sea in May 1942 and helped sink two Japanese fleet carriers at Midway, while she drew the Japanese attacks away from Enterprise and Hornet. That makes her right for scenarios from the first raids on the Gilbert and Marshall Islands to Midway. Because torpedoes from the submarine I-168 finished her there, keep destroyers nearby to hunt submarines.
