Background & context

The naval war in the Pacific was decided over distances that would have meant little to a European admiral. The Imperial Japanese Navy started in 1941 with superbly trained crews and the best torpedo of the war, the Type 93. At the outset the US Navy lost ship after ship, but replaced them faster than Japan could build. Night actions around Guadalcanal and cruiser duels in the waters off Savo marked this phase.

On the tabletop

The US Navy puts to sea with the heavy cruisers Indianapolis, Northampton and Chicago, escorted by 6 Fletcher-class destroyers. Japan sets Mogami, Kumano and Furutaka against them with 3 Fubuki destroyers, so the same number of heavy cruisers but fewer escorts. Lay the two A0 sea mats side by side and you have plenty of water for a cruiser action. Each of the 15 ships has a card of its own, on which you keep track of damage with the slider. The rulebook, markers, 12 six-sided and 4 ten-sided dice are included, so two of you can start playing straight away, and later both fleets grow with further ships.
