Background & context

On paper, the Regia Marina was the strongest fleet in the Mediterranean. In practice it was short of two essentials: radar and fuel. Night actions such as Cape Matapan in March 1941 therefore went badly, and from 1942 heavy units often simply stayed in port for lack of oil. The carrier Aquila was developed from a converted passenger liner and never completed. On the gaming table you can try out what the Italian fleet could have achieved with its own carrier air arm.

On the tabletop

The box provides a complete Italian fleet for Victory at Sea: the carrier Aquila with four flights of Reggiane RE.2001 Falco II torpedo bombers, the battleship Conte di Cavour, the cruisers Etna, Pola and Luigi Cadorna and three Navigatori-class destroyers. The Regia Marina's task was to disrupt British supply routes in the Mediterranean and keep its own to North Africa open, and major fleet battles were not needed for that. That is how you play it too: intercept British convoys and protect your own. With the never-completed Aquila you can try out what an Italian carrier arm might have achieved.
