    Product details

    Background & context

Originally planned as a battlecruiser, Akagi was converted to an aircraft carrier following the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty. She underwent extensive modernization in the 1930s, becoming a core vessel of Japan's carrier arm. She participated in several early Japanese offensives, including Pearl Harbor and the thrust into the Indian Ocean. At Midway, Akagi was severely damaged and scuttled by her own escorts.

    On the tabletop

The Akagi was the flagship of the Japanese carrier force whose aircraft struck Pearl Harbor, Rabaul, Darwin and targets in the Indian Ocean. In Victory at Sea she is the carrier your air strikes launch from. At Midway in June 1942 dive bombers from the Enterprise damaged her so badly that her own destroyers sank her, so keep her behind your cruisers and destroyers and under fighter cover. The model is resin with metal parts.
