Background & context

Commanded Shot hieß bei den Schweden: Musketiere wurden aus ihrem Regiment gelöst und den Reiterschwadronen beigegeben. Ritten die Reiter an, schoss der Trupp aus nächster Nähe in die gegnerische Formation, und die Kavallerie stieß in das entstandene Loch. Bei Breitenfeld 1631 und bei Lützen 1632 gehörte dieses Zusammenspiel zu den Gründen, warum sich die kaiserliche Reiterei an den schwedischen Flügeln festrannte.

On the tabletop

Six Swedish musketeers firing a volley together form a unit of commanded shot in Pike & Shotte. Gustavus Adolphus detached such musketeers from their regiments and placed them between his cavalry squadrons. Just before contact the unit fired a volley at close range, after which the horsemen broke into the shaken formation. That is how you deploy the unit beside your Swedish cavalry, suitable for Breitenfeld in 1631 or Lützen in 1632.
