Background & context

Auf der Iberischen Halbinsel wurde selten über flaches Land geschossen. Bei Bussaco lag die alliierte Linie hinter einem Höhenrücken, und wer die anrückenden Kolonnen im toten Winkel treffen wollte, brauchte Steilfeuer. Haubitzen warfen ihre Granaten in hohem Bogen und wirkten dort, wo Vollkugeln nur den Hang aufwühlten. In einer gemischten Batterie stand deshalb neben den Kanonen fast immer ein solches kurzes Rohr.

On the tabletop

The Portuguese howitzer with four gunners adds high-angle fire to your battery in Black Powder. In the Peninsula, enemies often sheltered behind ridges, walls or in hollows that round shot could hardly reach. The howitzer lobs its shells in a high arc straight into such places. Set up next to the 6- or 9-pounders of the same range, it forms a mixed battery of the kind that was usual at the time.
