Background & context

Schwere Kaliber besaß Portugal nach 1808 kaum noch selbst. Die Neunpfünder kamen überwiegend aus britischen Lieferungen und wurden von portugiesischen Mannschaften bedient. Ihr Vorteil lag in Reichweite und Wirkung gegen dichte Kolonnen, ihr Nachteil im Gewicht: Ein solches Rohr über die Bergstraßen der Halbinsel zu bringen kostete Zugtiere und Zeit. In der Verteidigung fester Höhenstellungen spielte es diesen Nachteil dann wieder ein.

On the tabletop

Heavy guns like this mostly came from British deliveries after 1808. Their weight makes them cumbersome, but in a prepared position on high ground they show their strength. So you deploy the gun at the start where it overlooks the ground in front of your line.
