Background & context

Gustav II. Adolf regierte Schweden ab 1611 und baute in zwanzig Jahren Krieg gegen Dänemark, Russland und Polen ein Heer auf, das mit Aushebung, einheitlicher Ausbildung und beweglichen Regimentsstücken arbeitete. 1630 landete er in Pommern und griff auf protestantischer Seite in den Dreißigjährigen Krieg ein. Bei Breitenfeld 1631 zerlegte seine flache, tief gestaffelte Aufstellung die Gewalthaufen der Liga. Ein Jahr später fiel er bei Lützen, weil er wie üblich selbst mit der Reiterei vorpreschte.

On the tabletop

Gustavus Adolphus leads your Swedish army in Pike & Shotte as commander-in-chief, shown in buff coat with drawn sword leaping an obstacle. He stood for shallower formations, volley fire and light regimental guns, and with these you set your brigades against the deep blocks of the Catholic League on the table too. Scenarios include Breitenfeld in 1631 and Lützen a year later, where he rode forward with the cavalry as usual and was killed. The figure is metal.
