Background & context

In the Winter War of 1939/40, a small Finnish army stood against a numerically far superior enemy. Its answer was mobility, ski troops and motti tactics: encircling Soviet columns on the forest roads and cutting them to pieces. Mortars suited this well because they could be carried broken down on sledges and on men's backs and fired from within the forest without line of sight. In the Continuation War from 1941, this pattern remained.

On the tabletop

A medium mortar gives Finnish lists in Bolt Action high-angle fire from a concealed position. Placed behind trees or a rise, it fires over cover at enemies who have dug in. On wooded tables with little open view, this lets you reach targets your riflemen cannot see. Three metal crew figures come with the tube. The team can be fielded from the Winter War through to the Continuation War from 1941.
