Background & context

The DShK in 12.7 mm calibre was introduced in 1938 and was the heavy machine gun of the Red Army. Its large round was effective against infantry and light vehicles, and on a mount with high elevation also against low-flying aircraft. The weapon stood with the riflemen, on trucks and later on Soviet tanks. It was heavy but regarded as rugged and stayed in service long after the war.

On the tabletop

The heavy support weapon of the Red Army advances with the riflemen and only becomes strong once dug in. Camouflaged positions keep open ground under fire and stop many an attack. From a standstill they fire far more often than on the march. Light vehicles are damaged; medium and heavy tanks cannot be stopped with them.
