Background & context

From 1934 the MG 34 served with the Wehrmacht: a general-purpose machine gun that worked as a light MG on its bipod and as a heavy MG on the tripod. From 1942 the MG 42 was added, which reached an exceptionally high rate of fire of about 1,200 rounds per minute. Both weapons were air-cooled and belt-fed. The design of the MG 42 lived on after the war in the Bundeswehr's MG 3.

On the tabletop

The Wehrmacht teams advance with the infantry, the weapon on the shoulder, and then take up position. From concealed cover they close off open ground to enemy attacks. They damage light vehicles, while medium and heavy tanks are not impressed. On the march they barely fire, and against air attacks and heavy fire they are poorly protected.
