    Product details

    Background & context

The Matilda II entered service in 1939 and became the most important British infantry tank of the first war years. At Arras in May 1940 it surprised German troops whose anti-tank guns barely penetrated its armour. In North Africa it earned the nickname "Queen of the Desert" until the German 88 mm gun and stronger tanks set limits for it. It was withdrawn from 1942, but in Australia it stayed in action until the fighting in the Pacific in 1945.

    On the tabletop

You play the Matilda II as infantry support for the early phase of the war. Its thick armour makes it a hard target for light weapons and early anti-tank guns, while its 2-pounder gun is no match for the late heavy tanks. It fits armies of 1940 to 1942, especially in the desert, where it advances side by side with the infantry.
