Background & context

In 1944 the American infantryman was the best-equipped foot soldier of the war: semi-automatic Garand rifle, M1 helmet, field jacket and a supply system that brought coffee and cigarettes right into the foxhole. Behind him stood an army that numbered barely 190,000 men in 1939 and grew to more than eight million by 1945. From Kasserine via Anzio and Normandy to the forests of the Ardennes, the infantry divisions bore the brunt, and the greater part of the losses.

On the tabletop

Fourteen American infantrymen in 1:32 from the 1969 mould make up this Vintage Classics group. With olive for the uniform, a skin tone and brown for rifle stock and boots, the painting is done quickly. The figures suit scenes from the Normandy landings to the snowy forests of the Ardennes in the last winter of the war. In a diorama you can dig them in at the edge of a wood or have them advance through a ruined village.
