Product details

Background & context

The Fallschirmjäger belonged to the Luftwaffe, not the Heer, and from 1938 Kurt Student built them up into a force for coups de main: Eben-Emael, the bridges in Holland, the drop on Crete in May 1941. Crete was won, but cost so many men that Hitler never again risked a large airborne operation. After that the force fought on the ground as elite infantry, in North Africa, at Monte Cassino and in Normandy, and kept jump helmet and Knochensack as its distinguishing marks to the end.

On the tabletop

The rimless jump helmet and the long jump smock known as the bone sack are worn by the 14 paratroopers of this 1:32 set, made from the 1976 mould. The force belonged to the Luftwaffe and jumped in Norway, in the Netherlands and on Crete in 1941, where losses were so heavy that no further large airborne assault followed. After that it fought on as ground infantry. Rocky slopes on Crete or ruins in Italy make suitable settings for your diorama.
